Is the Museum of Cham Sculpture Worth It? Yes, and Go Before My Son

Quick answer
WORTH IT Yes — 60,000₫ for the best hour of culture in the city, and it makes My Son make sense

The Museum of Cham Sculpture holds the world's largest collection of Cham art, in an airy French colonial pavilion at the western end of the Dragon Bridge. Entry is 60,000₫ (about $2.35), it opens roughly 07:00 to 17:00, and you need 60 to 90 minutes. The standing verdict from visitors is “small but world-class”, and that is accurate: this is one building of sandstone gods, altars and apsaras, not a day out. Its real value is as the companion to My Son — the best pieces were removed from those temples and are here. See the gallery before or after the sanctuary and both make far more sense.

What is in it

A thousand years of Champa, in one colonial pavilion

The Chăm ruled central Vietnam for well over a millennium, built in brick and sandstone, and left almost nothing intact. This building is where the surviving sculpture ended up.

The museum opened under the French in 1919 to hold what was being lifted from the temple sites along this coast, and the rooms are still organised by where the pieces came from: My Son, Tra Kieu, Dong Duong, Thap Mam. What you are looking at is Hindu and Buddhist sculpture — Shiva, Ganesha, Vishnu, dancing apsaras, elephant-lion guardians, and the great altar pedestals carved with entire narrative friezes. Several pieces are designated national treasures.

It is genuinely small. Two floors, open galleries, natural light, plenty of English labelling and enough shade and airflow to make it bearable in June. Sixty to ninety minutes covers it properly, which makes it one of the few things in this city that fits neatly into a spare morning or a rainy afternoon.

The pairing with My Son Sanctuary is the point. The sanctuary is 69km south-west, the entry ticket is 150,000₫ and it opens at 06:30 — and what stands there now is brick foundations, towers damaged by war, and empty plinths. The gods that used to be on those plinths are in this museum. Do one without the other and you get half a story. Since the July 2025 merger, both sites are administratively inside Da Nang, which is a bureaucratic detail that at least makes the itinerary sound tidier.

One thing to keep straight: the Cham Museum has nothing to do with the Cham Islands, the snorkelling archipelago off Hoi An, which are a March-to-September product with a different name and a different problem. See the islands page.

Who it suits

Is the Cham Museum for you?

First-timersThe single best hour of history in Da Nang, and cheap enough that a dud is a 60,000₫ mistake.
CouplesQuiet, cool and unhurried, but it is one building. Pair it with the riverfront rather than treating it as an afternoon.
FamiliesSandstone gods behind rope do not hold small children. Older kids doing anything on ancient civilisations will get more out of it than the adults.
SoloNinety minutes, English labelling throughout, no queue and no need for a guide or a group.
Budget60,000₫ is two bowls of bun cha ca. There is nothing else in the city that concentrates this much for the money.
Rainy daysIndoor, central, open all day and near everything else on the west bank. One of the three genuinely good wet-afternoon options.
Doing My SonClose to essential. The sanctuary's best sculpture is in this building, and seeing it makes the empty plinths legible.

You do not book the museum — walk up and pay 60,000₫ at the desk. What is worth booking is My Son, because the gate is 150,000₫, it opens at 06:30, and the difference between a good visit and a bad one is entirely about being there before the heat and the coach waves.

Cham Museum FAQ

How much is the Museum of Cham Sculpture?

60,000₫, about $2.35, paid in cash at the desk. There is no separate charge for photography and no booking system — you turn up. It is open roughly 07:00 to 17:00 every day.

How long do you need at the Cham Museum?

Sixty to ninety minutes covers both floors at a proper pace. It is deliberately small: one colonial pavilion of open galleries, not a national museum. That size is why it works as a spare-morning or rainy-afternoon visit rather than a planned day.

Is the Cham Museum worth visiting?

Yes. It holds the world's largest collection of Cham sculpture and the recurring visitor verdict — small but world-class — is fair. For 60,000₫ it is the best hour of history in Da Nang, and it is the one attraction here that makes another one better.

Should you visit the Cham Museum before or after My Son?

Either, but do both. The best sculpture from the My Son towers was removed and is in this building, so the sanctuary's empty plinths only make sense once you have seen what stood on them. Before works if you like context; after works if you like recognition.

Where is the Museum of Cham Sculpture?

At the western end of the Dragon Bridge in Hai Chau, on the corner of Trung Nu Vuong and 2 Thang 9. It is walkable from most riverside hotels and 10 to 15 minutes by Grab from the My Khe beach strip, at roughly 60,000–90,000₫ in a car.

Is the Cham Museum good for kids?

Not especially. It is sandstone sculpture behind rope with text panels, and small children will be done in ten minutes. Older children studying ancient civilisations get a lot out of it. For a family wet afternoon, the Mikazuki water dome is the better call.

Is the Cham Museum the same as the Cham Islands?

No, and the names catch people out. The museum is a gallery in the middle of Da Nang. The Cham Islands are a snorkelling archipelago off Hoi An that only operates from about March to September — from October to February 40–60% of departures are cancelled.
