Da Nang is a base city that happens to have a beach. Within 100km you have Hoi An's UNESCO old town, the My Son Cham sanctuary, the Hai Van Pass, the Marble Mountains, Ba Na Hills and the Imperial City at Hue. The airport sits 2–3km from the river with around 56 international flights a day. If you are the sort of traveller who gets restless after three days horizontal, that reach is the whole argument.
Nha Trang is a beach holiday city. The bay is its product — a long municipal beach, islands offshore, diving, a cable car to an island theme park, and a resort strip built to service exactly that. Its cultural inventory is thinner: the Po Nagar Cham towers and a couple of pagodas. It is also further south and drier, which matters more than most comparisons admit.
The crowd difference is the thing regulars mention first. Nha Trang has been Russia's Vietnamese beach town for two decades — r/danang's shorthand for it is “Russia part 2”, and Russian-language signage is standard. Da Nang's long-stay scene skews American and Australian, with Korea the dominant tourist market at around 150 flights a week. Neither is better. They are different rooms.

Quy Nhon, the “next Da Nang”, honestly
Ask this question in any Vietnam forum and someone will answer Quy Nhon within three comments. It sits between the two, has long quiet beaches, cheap seafood, Cham towers and almost no foreign crowd — the pitch is that it looks like Da Nang did before the high-rise wall went up on Vo Nguyen Giap.
The honest version: that recommendation is real and it is also an argument about what you lose. Quy Nhon has no international airport of consequence, a thin medical infrastructure, very little coworking and a small English-speaking scene. For a week of quiet beach it is an excellent call. For a month of work, or a trip where a hospital or a flight home might matter, it is not yet a substitute for Da Nang — and the people saying it will be in five years have been saying it for five years.
If quiet is what you are after within Da Nang itself, the equivalents are Non Nuoc, Man Thai and Lien Chieu, all of which are a fraction of the beach-strip price.
Where to sleep, and what to do when you land
The case for Da Nang is the day-trip reach, so the two things worth sorting are a bed near the coast road and the half-day that covers three sights at once.
