First-timers on a short trip — My Khe wins
If you have four nights and you want to swim, eat seafood, see the Dragon Bridge and take a day trip, the road crossing is worth more than the neighbourhood. You will be out of the hotel all day anyway, and the thing you actually use it for is sleeping and swimming. Book the strip, do not overthink it.
Nomads and anyone staying over a week — An Thuong wins
This one is not close. You need a café you can walk to, a desk, a gym, a supermarket and other people, and the strip has none of those. An Thuong studios run $300–500 a month against $450–700 on the beachfront, so you save money and gain a neighbourhood at the same time. Every long-stayer works this out within a fortnight.
Families — it depends on the age of the children
With toddlers, the road crossing wins: a five-minute walk with a pushchair, beach kit and a two-year-old is not five minutes. Family hotels on the strip are built for exactly this. With school-age children who can walk and want to eat somewhere different every night, An Thuong is better and cheaper. If you want a compound with a kids club instead, that is the Non Nuoc strip at km 12.
Budget travellers — An Thuong wins, with a caveat
An Thuong's hostel grid starts around $10 and is where solo travellers actually meet people in this city. The caveat is that Hai Chau across the river goes down to $5–8 and puts you in the middle of the real city with better food — at the cost of being 3km from the sand. If the beach is not the point, cross the river and save the difference.
Couples on a short break — My Khe, narrowly
A sea-view room at $40–60 is a genuinely cheap luxury by any international standard, and the 17:00 beach hour on this strip is the best free thing in Da Nang. If you would rather eat and drink somewhere different every night than watch the sea from bed, invert it — An Thuong is 2.5km south and better at that.
What 2.5km actually buys you
You are not choosing between two beaches. You are choosing whether Da Nang has a street you like walking down.
The single most useful frame for this city: Da Nang is a 30km coast road and every neighbourhood is a position on it. My Khe is km 4.5, An Thuong km 7, and the sand between them is continuous — the same flags, the same lifeguards, the same 05:00 swim culture, the same red flags from October. Nobody has ever preferred one of these bases because the beach was better.
What changes is the fifty metres behind you. Behind My Khe there is a boulevard of hotel lobbies, tour desks and convenience stores; behind An Thuong there is a grid you can get lost in for an evening. The Reddit line about the beachside café strip being "a place where dreams go to die" is aimed squarely at the first of those, and after a week you will understand it. The counter-argument is just as real: for four nights, a hotel lobby is fine and a road crossing beats a walk.
The other 2.5km worth knowing about runs in the opposite direction. Man Thai at km 2.5 is roughly half An Thuong's rents with a working fishing village attached, and Hai Chau across the river is 25–40% cheaper again with the best food in the city. One last practical note, because it changes the maths for long stays: Expect a foreigner price and negotiate against it. In An Thuong the same apartment is commonly listed at 6–9 million₫ to a Vietnamese renter and 14–19 million₫ in English — a 30–100% gap that is standard, not exceptional.
