The My Khe Strip and Phuoc My: Stay Here on Your First Trip (2026)
The My Khe strip sits at km 4.5 on the coast road and it is the default answer for a first trip to Da Nang for one blunt reason: the beach is across the street and you do not have to think about anything else. A beachfront four-star runs $40–60, which is the value sweet spot on this coast, and the wall of hotels on Võ Nguyên Giáp — Four Points, Radisson, Hilton Garden Inn, TMS, A La Carte and dozens of Korean- and Chinese-oriented four-stars — is competing hard on price. The honest cost is that it is resort-like and disconnected from local life. For four nights that is a feature. By night eight it is the reason people move 2.5km south to An Thuong.
The hotel wall, and the blocks behind it
One boulevard, one line of towers, and a completely different city fifty metres inland.
Everything here is organised around Võ Nguyên Giáp, the middle section of the coast road. On the seaward side: the beach, the promenade, the exercise stations, the sunbeds at about 40,000₫, the surf schools and the flagged swimming sectors. On the landward side: an almost unbroken wall of hotels running from the Phạm Văn Đồng beach entrance south to Nguyễn Văn Thoại. That two-kilometre stretch is what people mean by "the My Khe strip", and it is where most first-time visitors to Da Nang sleep.
The branded end of the wall is Four Points, Radisson, Hilton Garden Inn, TMS and A La Carte, with its well-known rooftop. Behind and between them sit dozens of Korean- and Chinese-oriented four-stars that most Western guides never name, because they are not marketed in English — they are the reason the strip is priced the way it is. Korea has been Da Nang's number one source market since 2016 and this boulevard is built for it.
Phước Mỹ is the ward immediately behind the wall, and it is where the strip actually eats and drinks. Beach bars, the seafood barns, cheap grilled-meat places, massage shops at 250,000–450,000₫ an hour, and the backpacker energy that the boulevard itself does not have. It is one street back and about half the price of anything with a sea view.
Positions along the coast road: Man Thai and the fishing village are 2km north, Lady Buddha and the Son Tra headland 4.5km north, An Thuong 2.5km south, the Marble Mountains 6.5km south and Hoi An 25km south. Hai Chau and the river are 3km west over the Dragon or Han River bridge, and the airport is about 10 minutes beyond that.
The strip, priced against the alternatives
The premium you pay here is for a road crossing. It is a real premium and, for a short trip, a defensible one. Below is what that crossing costs against the two neighbourhoods either side of it.

My Khe, hour by hour
Da Nang has a dawn beach culture that catches almost every visitor out. The sand is at its busiest at 05:00 and again after 17:00, and nearly empty in the middle of the day when foreigners assume it will be full. Plan around the locals, not around your own instincts.

Why people move out of the strip after a week
It is a corridor, not a neighbourhood, and that becomes obvious around day six.
The criticism of this stretch is consistent and fair: it is resort-like and disconnected from local life. Almost everything at street level on Vo Nguyen Giap is a hotel lobby, a tour desk, a convenience store or a restaurant with laminated photographs of the food. The Reddit version of the complaint is harsher — the beachside café strip described as "a place where dreams go to die", and the wider point that 95% of the city is plain ugly and only the beach and river edges are objectively nice. That is an exaggeration you will recognise the shape of after a week here.
The high-rise wall itself is a live local controversy. The critique is that Da Nang is repeating Nha Trang's mistake by building a continuous barrier between the city and its own beach. Whether or not you care about the urbanism, the practical consequence is that you cannot see the sea from anywhere behind the first row, and rents on that first row carry a $150–200 monthly premium for the view.
The second thing to know is the water itself.
Swim between the flags, and take that literally. The sea off My Khe is calm and swimmable from roughly March to August; from September the swell builds and red flags go up, and the water is effectively closed to casual swimmers October to December. The real danger is not sharks or jellyfish — it is rip currents, which drown people here most years. Lifeguards staff the flagged sectors roughly 05:00–19:00. Look for a darker, calmer-looking channel with debris moving out to sea: that is the rip, and it is the bit that looks safest.
The third is erosion. A severe episode between October and December 2024 stripped roughly 100 metres of My Khe sand and dike, and Man Thai took damage in the same period. It recurs most monsoons. The beach comes back, but if you are booking a sea-view room for November you are booking a view of construction plant as often as sand.

My Khe for a first trip of four or five nights, An Thuong for anything longer. The strip puts the sand across the road and nothing else within walking distance; An Thuong puts a walkable grid of cafés, bars and coworking around you and the beach 5–10 minutes away. One street inland into Phuoc My is noticeably more real, and 3km west across the river Hai Chau is a different city entirely.
What is there to do around the My Khe strip in the evening?
Beach bars on the sand side, seafood barns and grill places in Phuoc My behind the wall, and massage at 250,000–450,000₫ an hour. On Saturday and Sunday the Dragon Bridge fire show is at 21:00 3km west — the bridge closes to traffic around 20:45, so leave by 20:15. The late-night bars are in An Thuong, not here.
Is the beach at My Khe free?

Is My Khe good for families?
