Surfing in Da Nang: The Season Is the Inverse of the Swim Season

Quick answer
DEPENDS Worth it if you are learning and here in winter. If you came in July there is nothing to surf

The single fact that governs surfing here: the surf season is the exact inverse of the swim season. The waves arrive with the north-east monsoon and run roughly November to March, which is precisely when the sea is red-flagged and nobody is swimming. From March to August, when the water is warm and flat and lovely, there is usually nothing to ride. Lessons cost $30–50 and the breaks are beach breaks straight off My Khe. The honest verdict: this is a good beginner and intermediate coast, not a destination break. Nobody flies to Da Nang to surf, and the people who tell you otherwise are selling lessons.

The thing nobody tells you

Surf season and swim season are opposites here

Two travellers get this wrong in opposite directions every year, and both of them booked at the wrong end of the calendar.

Da Nang's coast faces east into the South China Sea. The north-east monsoon from around September to March pushes swell straight onto it — which is what makes the winter surf, and also what shuts the swimming down. From roughly April to August the wind swings, the sea goes glassy, and the beach fills at 05:00 with people doing lengths. Those are the same conditions from two different points of view.

So the practical split: surf November to March, with the most consistent conditions in the middle of that window; swim March to August. September and October sit in between and are the wrong answer for both — big, disorganised, storm-driven water during the wettest weeks of the year, when October alone gets 650mm of rain. Sea temperature is not a factor at either end: it never drops below about 24°C, so nobody wears a wetsuit.

Swim between the flags, and take that literally. The sea off My Khe is calm and swimmable from roughly March to August; from September the swell builds and red flags go up, and the water is effectively closed to casual swimmers October to December. The real danger is not sharks or jellyfish — it is rip currents, which drown people here most years. Lifeguards staff the flagged sectors roughly 05:00–19:00. Look for a darker, calmer-looking channel with debris moving out to sea: that is the rip, and it is the bit that looks safest.

Which matters more for surfers than swimmers in one respect: in surf season the lifeguarded swim sectors are red-flagged, so you are in the water outside a supervised zone, in the months with the strongest currents. Surf with a school or with other people, not alone at dawn in December.

By month

Surf season, month by month

Rated for surf, not for a beach holiday — which means this table reads as the mirror image of the one on the My Khe page.

Jan
Good
Mid-season. Consistent monsoon swell, sea still 24°C, grey skies and 85mm of rain. Nobody is swimming, which is the point.
Feb
Good
The best month of the year overall: 25mm of rain, sun returning, and the swell has not gone yet.
Mar
Fading
The crossover month. Waves drop off through March as the swim season opens. Lessons still run; consistency is falling.
Apr
Flat
Glassy and calm, sea at 26°C. Perfect for swimming and SUP, and there is essentially nothing to surf.
May
Flat
Hot, sunny, sea at 28°C and flat. Take a SUP out at dawn instead and come back in November.
Jun
Flat
Peak heat, peak domestic crowds, no waves. This is the month people book expecting surf and are disappointed.
Jul
Flat
Sea at 30°C and calm. Busiest beach month of the year and the emptiest for surf.
Aug
Flat
115mm of rain and the first storm risk, but the swell has not organised yet. Occasional storm surf, not a season.
Sep
Messy
310mm of rain and the monsoon arriving. Waves appear but they are big, disorganised and storm-driven.
Oct
Avoid
650mm of rain, the typhoon peak and heavy erosion works on the beach. Not a surf trip, whatever the swell chart says.
Nov
Good
The season opens properly. 430mm of rain and storms to about 10 December, but the swell starts organising.
Dec
Good
215mm and tapering, sea at 25°C, consistent waves and almost nobody else on the beach. A quiet, cheap month to learn.

The honest read

A good place to learn, not a place to plan a surf trip around

This is a beach-break coast with a short season and modest swell, in a city that is not organised around surfing. Both halves of that sentence matter.

What is actually here: beach breaks running along the My Khe and Bac My An sand, typically waist to head high in season, with sandbanks that move through the winter. It is forgiving, close to shore, warm, and there is no reef to worry about — which is a genuinely good combination for a first or second time on a board. Intermediate surfers will get fun days. Advanced surfers will be bored, and the ones who come anyway usually end up talking about somewhere else in Vietnam.

The scene is small. A handful of surf schools operate on the beach and run lessons at $30–50, boards are rented on the sand by the hour or the day at whatever the school quotes, and the schools appear in season and thin out when the swell goes. There is no surf town, no board-shaping culture and no line-up etiquette problem, because there is rarely a line-up.

Two other things to do on the water, both of which run in the opposite season: SUP at dawn, 200,000–350,000₫, which is the best use of the flat summer water, and the motorised hire — jet ski $50–80 an hour, parasailing 500,000–700,000₫ — which runs roughly April to September. Lessons and boards on the My Khe strip

There is no gate here — surf schools price their own lessons at $30–50 and rent boards on the sand. Booking ahead mostly buys you a confirmed slot with a school that is actually operating, which matters at the edges of the season when several of them shut down.

Da Nang surfing FAQ

When is surf season in Da Nang?

Roughly November to March, on the north-east monsoon swell, with the most consistent conditions between December and February. It is the exact inverse of the swim season — from April to August the sea is warm, flat and lovely and there is essentially nothing to ride.

Can you surf in Da Nang in summer?

Not really. June, July and August are flat, hot and busy, and the occasional storm swell in August is not a season. If you are here in summer, take a dawn SUP for 200,000–350,000₫ instead — it is the best use of that water.

How much are surf lessons in Da Nang?

About $30–50 for a group lesson with a school on the beach, including board and instruction. Private coaching costs more. Boards are also rented on the sand by the hour or the day at a rate the school quotes on the spot — agree it and the damage terms before you take one.

Is Da Nang good for surfing?

It is good for learning and fine for intermediates: warm water, forgiving beach breaks, no reef, and nobody in the line-up. It is not a destination break. Advanced surfers will run out of interest quickly, and no one should plan a trip to Vietnam around these waves.

Do you need a wetsuit to surf in Da Nang?

No. Sea temperature runs between 24°C in January and 30°C in July and August, so boardshorts work all year. A rash vest is worth having for sun and board rash, nothing more.

Where do you surf in Da Nang?

The beach breaks along My Khe and the Bac My An stretch south of it, straight off the central strip on Vo Nguyen Giap. The sandbanks move through the winter, so the good peak changes; the schools on the beach know where it is on the day.

Is it safe to surf in Da Nang?

Surf season is also red-flag season, which means you are in the water outside the lifeguarded swim sectors during the months with the strongest currents. Rip currents drown people on this coast most years. Go out with a school or with company, not alone at first light in December.

Should I surf in Da Nang or Hoi An?

Da Nang has the schools and the easiest access from the beach hotels. An Bang, down at Hoi An, picks up the same monsoon swell and is quieter. Both are the same coast and the same season — the choice is really about where you are staying. See the base comparison.
