My Khe Beach, Honestly: When You Can Swim and When You Cannot

Bãi biển Mỹ KhêFree · sunbeds ~40,000₫Swimmable roughly March–AugustLifeguards in the flagged sectors

Quick answer
WORTH IT Yes — free, wide and genuinely good, but only swimmable about half the year

Mỹ Khê is free, several kilometres long, backed by a promenade and exercise stations, and TripAdvisor ranked it the 6th best beach in Asia in 2024. Sunbeds run about 40,000₫ (~$1.60), there are showers and surf schools, and lifeguards staff the flagged sectors roughly 05:00–19:00. The thing nobody tells you: this is a dawn beach. It is busiest at 05:00 and again from 17:00 to sunset, and nearly empty at midday, because locals swim before work and after it and treat the middle of the day as unusable. Swimming is realistic March to August; from September the swell builds and by October the water is effectively closed.

The flags, the season and the thing that actually kills people here

Swim between the flags, and take that literally. The sea off My Khe is calm and swimmable from roughly March to August; from September the swell builds and red flags go up, and the water is effectively closed to casual swimmers October to December. The real danger is not sharks or jellyfish — it is rip currents, which drown people here most years. Lifeguards staff the flagged sectors roughly 05:00–19:00. Look for a darker, calmer-looking channel with debris moving out to sea: that is the rip, and it is the bit that looks safest.

The beach is divided into named, flagged swim sectors — the main ones sit off the Pham Van Dong entrance and along the stretch marked T20 to T18 — and those are the only places with lifeguards. Swimming outside them is common and is exactly how the drownings happen. Nobody will stop you. That is the point.

Two smaller practicalities. Jellyfish appear in summer pulses and after storms; they are painful and almost never dangerous, and they barely register in local discussion compared with the currents. And the sand gets genuinely hot between 11:00 and 15:00 in May to August, which is half the reason the beach empties out at midday.

By month

Can you swim at My Khe? Month by month

Sea temperature is not the constraint here — the water sits between 24°C and 30°C all year. Rain and swell are. This is the swim verdict for each month, with the rainfall and sea temperature behind it.

Jan
Poor
85mm of rain, sea at 24°C, grey and choppy. Locals still swim at dawn; most visitors will not want to.
Feb
Good
25mm of rain and the dry season starting. Sea at 24°C is brisk but the water settles down fast.
Mar
Excellent
The driest month at 20mm, sea 24°C, flat calm water and green flags. The swim season opens properly.
Apr
Excellent
35mm of rain, sea up to 26°C, warm air and no crowds yet. The best all-round beach month of the year.
May
Excellent
85mm but mostly in short bursts, sea at 28°C. Hot, sunny and the water is at its most comfortable.
Jun
Very good
90mm, sea 29°C, peak heat and 7 to 8 hours of sun. Domestic school holidays fill the sand at both ends of the day.
Jul
Very good
85mm, sea 30°C. Busiest month of the year with domestic and Korean visitors. Swim at 05:00 like everyone else.
Aug
Good
115mm and the first storm risk creeping in, sea 30°C. Still swimmable, but check the flags rather than the sky.
Sep
Marginal
310mm of rain and the monsoon starting. Swell builds, red flags become common and the water turns over.
Oct
Closed
650mm — the wettest month — plus the typhoon peak. Effectively unswimmable and the erosion months begin.
Nov
Closed
430mm and storms running to about 10 December. Big surf, red flags, and the best month of the year to be a surfer.
Dec
Poor
215mm, tapering, sea at 25°C and only about 3.5 hours of sun a day. Grey, and still not a swimming beach.

Rainfall and sea temperatures from the city's long-run monthly averages. The swim verdict follows the flags, not the thermometer — see the month-by-month weather page and the surf page, whose season is the exact inverse of this one.

The 05:00 thing

The dawn-swim culture is the real story of this beach

A photograph captioned “Da Nang beach at 5am” is a recurring hit on Reddit for a reason: at first light this is one of the busiest public spaces in Vietnam, and by 11:00 it is deserted.

Locals swim before work. From around 04:45 the sand fills with hundreds of people — swimmers in the flagged sectors, groups doing exercises on the promenade stations, badminton, football, and a whole economy of coffee carts. It happens again from 17:00 until dark. The middle of the day, which is when most visitors show up, is the emptiest and worst part of it: no shade, hot sand and the strongest sun.

The practical version: set an alarm once. Sunrise over the Son Tra headland from the water at 05:15 is the single best free thing in Da Nang, and it costs you one early night. Coffee on the promenade afterwards runs 20,000–40,000₫.

Facilities are straightforward. Sunbeds about 40,000₫, freshwater showers and changing blocks at the main entrances, deckchair and towel hire along the strip, and surf schools with boards. Agree the price of anything before you sit on it — the beach towel and lounger hustle is a low-grade but persistent annoyance on the busy stretches.

The problem nobody puts in a brochure

The beach is eroding, and it happens every monsoon

Between October and December 2024 a severe erosion episode stripped roughly 100 metres of sand and dike from My Khe and damaged the shoreline up at Man Thai. It was the worst recent case, not a one-off: the monsoon swell cuts the beach back every year and the city rebuilds it, so the width of the sand in March is not the width of the sand in November.

What that means for a visit. In the monsoon months sections of the beachfront are fenced, machinery works on the dike, and some access ramps close. None of it makes the city unvisitable — but if you are booking a beachfront room for November on the strength of a photograph taken in April, understand that the beach in the photograph may not be there. Getting on the water at My Khe

The beach itself costs nothing and always will. What is worth booking ahead is anything with equipment and an instructor, because the good operators on this strip are small and the seasons are short — motorised hire runs roughly April to September, and surf lessons run the opposite half of the year.

The beachfront wall along Vo Nguyen Giap — Four Points, Radisson, Hilton Garden Inn, A La Carte and a long row of Korean-oriented four-stars — puts you across the road from the sand for $40–60 a night in the four-star band, against a city average of about $84 for a five-star. The trade-off is that the beachfront is a hotel corridor rather than a neighbourhood: An Thuong, five to ten minutes back, has the cafés, the bars and the walkable grid, and costs less. Rates fall sharply in October and November, which is also when the sea closes.

My Khe Beach FAQ

Can you swim at My Khe Beach?

Between roughly March and August, yes, in the flagged sectors. From September the monsoon swell builds and red flags go up, and from October to December the water is effectively closed to casual swimmers. Sea temperature is never the problem — it runs 24°C to 30°C all year — the swell and the rip currents are.

Is My Khe Beach free?

Yes. Access, the promenade and the showers cost nothing. A sunbed and umbrella runs about 40,000₫ (~$1.60) for the day, and everything motorised is priced separately on the sand. Agree any price before you use the thing.

What time is best at My Khe Beach?

05:00 or from 17:00 to sunset, which is when locals swim and when the beach is at its best. The middle of the day is the emptiest and the worst — no shade, hot sand and the strongest sun. Dawn on this beach is the single best free thing in the city.

Are there sharks or jellyfish at My Khe?

Jellyfish appear in summer pulses and after storms; they hurt and are almost never dangerous. Sharks are not a factor. The actual danger is rip currents, which drown people here most years — look for a darker, calmer-looking channel with debris moving seaward, because that is the bit that looks safest and is not.

How much are sunbeds and water sports at My Khe?

Sunbed and umbrella about 40,000₫. Jet ski $50 an hour for 90hp and up to $80 for 150hp, parasailing 500,000–700,000₫ a flight, banana boat 150,000–250,000₫ a person, SUP 200,000–350,000₫. Motorised hire runs roughly April to September and shuts down for the monsoon.

Is My Khe really one of the best beaches in Asia?

TripAdvisor ranked it 6th in Asia in 2024, and it is genuinely wide, clean along the main sectors and easy to use. The honest counterweight from long-stay residents: it is not Thailand, there are scruffy stretches away from the managed sectors, and it is unswimmable for a quarter of the year.

Is the beach at My Khe disappearing?

It erodes every monsoon and is rebuilt. The worst recent episode ran October to December 2024 and took about 100 metres of sand and dike, with damage north at Man Thai. Expect fencing and machinery on parts of the beachfront in the wet months, and do not assume a November beach looks like the April photographs.

Where exactly should you swim on My Khe?

In the flagged and lifeguarded sectors — the main ones are off the Pham Van Dong entrance and along the T20 to T18 stretch — and nowhere else. Lifeguards work those zones roughly 05:00 to 19:00. Outside them there is no cover at all.
