The airport is inside the city, and it changes the whole trip
Almost every beach destination in Southeast Asia puts you an hour from your hotel. Da Nang puts you fifteen minutes from the sand and five from dinner, and that single fact does more work than any attraction here.
DAD sits immediately west of downtown, roughly 2–3km from the Han River. From the terminal door you are about 5 minutes from the Bach Dang riverfront, 10–15 minutes from the My Khe hotel strip and 20–25 minutes from the Non Nuoc resorts. It is why the city works so well as a base for day trips, why a layover here is actually usable, and why long-stayers keep saying the same thing about Da Nang: the airport is ten minutes away.
The trade is noise. Flight paths run over Hai Chau and the western city from roughly 06:00 to 23:00. It is a genuine consideration if you are choosing a long-stay apartment on that side of the river, and close to irrelevant if you are on the beach. Beach-side, the noise problem in this city is construction and karaoke, not aircraft.
One consequence people underestimate: because the transfer is so short, an early flight does not need an airport hotel and a late arrival does not wreck a night. A 23:00 landing still puts you at a My Khe hotel by midnight for about $5.

The five-minute version of not getting stung
Da Nang is one of Vietnam's safest cities and the airport is the one place a visitor still reliably meets a hustle. All of it is avoidable.
The standing scam here is interception: a friendly man in the arrivals hall who asks where you are going, walks you past the rank and puts you in an unmarked car with a fast meter. Legitimate drivers do not solicit inside the terminal. Walk out, open the app, meet the car at the pickup bay.
2–3x the real fareGrab and Xanh SM both need a connection to quote and book. Airport wifi exists and is patchy at 01:00 with three flights in. An eSIM installed before you fly removes the entire decision — this is the cheapest insurance at DAD.
App pickups from DAD carry a 30,000₫ airport surcharge, shown in the app fare. If a driver asks for extra cash on top of an app fare for "the airport", that is not it — the surcharge is already included.
There are bank ATMs in and beside the terminal. Withdraw 2,000,000–3,000,000₫ (about $80–120) and ask for a mix — a 500,000₫ note is useless at a bánh mì cart. Exchange desks in arrivals give worse rates than the ATMs beside them.
A newer one worth knowing: WhatsApp or SMS messages posing as your hotel after you book, asking you to re-confirm card details or pay a deposit through a link. Da Nang hotels do not do this. Contact the property through the platform you booked on.

The T2 expansion, and what it means if you fly here in 2027
The international terminal is being enlarged. Work broke ground in May 2026 on a $58 million expansion taking T2 from 4 million to 6 million passengers a year, due to complete in the middle of 2027. The airport handled 7.8 million passengers in total in 2025, up 11.7%, so the pressure is real — the international side at peak Korean-arrival hours is the part that feels overloaded today.
Practical implication for 2026 and early 2027: expect construction hoarding, some rearranged walking routes and occasional queue chaos at the busiest times. If you are landing between 21:00 and midnight, when a wave of Northeast Asian arrivals lands together, fast-track from about $23 stops being a luxury and starts being reasonable value.
New route growth has been fast: Emirates via Dubai and Bangkok gave Da Nang its first Gulf link, Air Premia added Incheon, Vietnam Airlines added Osaka, and Vietjet's Ahmedabad route carried 10,000 passengers in four months on two weekly flights. Bali, Nok Air and Philippines AirAsia services have been announced for 2026.
